Space Characters:
A space is whatever your system's isspace(3) function says it is. Space characters (codepoint 32) and tabs (codepoint 9) are always spaces, and additional characters may be spaces depending on your locale.
Because isspace(3) is a byte-oriented function, code points >= 256 that are spaces won't be honored.
